Relevance to Conference Theme: Application of SAASM GPS, novel guidance techniques and the ability to convert existing High Explosive rounds to Guided Munitions will be major contributors to shaping the future of gun system development, employment and logistics. Objective of Presentation: Provide a status update on the current SDD contract efforts. The Precision Guidance Kit (PGK) combines GPS guidance and warhead fuzing into a single device that can be screwed into a standard NATO fuze well. Its design features a GPS-based, fixed canard guidance and control package with gun-hardened electronics, a self-generating power supply, and a minimum number of moving parts for high reliability. PGK transforms a conventional artillery round into an affordable GPS-guided projectile capable of an accuracy of less than 50 meters CEP. The technology embodied in PGK will greatly increase the effectiveness of the Army’s artillery forces and their associated brigades by reducing risk of collateral damage and by dramatically reducing the number of rounds needed for effect. This precision capability will change the way fires missions are planned and executed.
